This western theme park is located in the Tabernas desert and over time has evolved from being simply a movie theater with a western town to today's theme park formed by a town of west, an aquatic area and a zoo.
In the decades of the 60, 70 and 80 of the last century the Tabernas desert was used by many filmmakers, most of the spaghetti western genre, as a location to shoot their western movies. As vestiges of this activity have been preserved in Tabernas the different sets, which recreated western villages, built. But in the sets not only mounted a facade of wood, but they made entire buildings to be able to roll in, like the hall, the jail, office of the sheriff, canteen, barber shop, church, etc.
The three villages that are now preserved and open for the public's visit are Fort Bravo, Western-Leone, and Oasys Mini Hollywood , which is what we recommend.
Entering the Theme Park Oasys Mini Hollywood means transporting to the far west , because we are facing a city created exclusively for that purpose. We will find the church, the mine, the sheriff's house, the Indian town, the telegraph, the barber and all the typical houses of the Westerns movies.
As soon as the entrance arrives, it is formed by a strong wooden palisade of the Seventh Cavalry , and when we cross it we find a street of Far West , with a casino, a Chinese laundry, several houses of attrezzo and the entrance of a mine. The entrance of the mine, including trucks, was the last thing that was built to be able to shoot any movie scene that included gold prospectors.
We can also see the water mill, the chapel and a typical Mexican house, to shoot some border scenes. Then we will find ourselves in a street full of houses, one of them used as a gift shop where we can buy all the necessary props to feel like cowboys like guns, hats, sheriff stars and typical souvenirs. Another one of the houses is the one of photography where the costumes lend you to take a photo of time.
The main square is full of buildings but highlights the lounge, the sheriff's office and the bank . The sheriff's office has, how could it be otherwise, two cells for the bandits, and the typical posters of wanted, reward. This building becomes main during the performance of the West Show , where we are dramatized by a scene where some outlaws and a sheriff intervene with their assistants. The show does not lack anything good against bad guys, music by Sergio Leone, shootings, fights, the gallows, people dragged by horses, ... We can not miss it, they give two daily passes of the show one in the morning and another in the afternoon , about 12 and 17h. In summer they give three passes, since the schedule of the park is extended.
After the cowboy show, the actors stay in the square so that all the children who want can be photographed mounted on horseback or get on a cart.
In the saloon it works as a bar and we can take something sheltered from the heat and in a very authentic environment. Do not miss the Cancan and Cowgirls show, where some dancers and a master of ceremonies transport us to a tavern in the wild west. You have to arrive in time if you want to take a table, otherwise you will have to stand on the sides or up in the chicken coop. There are two daily passes, morning and afternoon, and in summer it is extended to three.
The bank has a room set for indoor shootings and the rest of the building houses the Museum of Cinema . In the museum we can see all the posters of the films that have been filmed in Mini Hollywood over time, and also has a collection of projectors of impressive cinema. If you are a movie lover and yearn for the old days when you went to the movies and the projector made noise and showed all the flaws of the film on screen, this museum will make you feel nostalgic.
Another of the buildings in use is a barn that houses the Carretas Museum , here we also have to say that the collection is spectacular. There are all kinds of western carts, stagecoaches, wagons, funerals, etc. All of them have been used in the filming of films.
Other notable buildings are the mining area and the railway, the cemetery, the barbershop, telegraphs, the grocery store, weapons shop, hat shop, etc. We must highlight the Garden of the Desert , a garden area dedicated to the cactus where we can see a wonderful collection of cacti from around the world with more than 250 species of these desert plants.
To eat there is a large restaurant with a free buffet . If we plan to stay to eat inside the enclosure is a good option to buy the entrance with food included, because if not then the buffet is much more expensive. Behind the bench there is a picnic area covered, with tables and chairs, where we can eat the sandwiches or food that we have brought.
This town is in the middle of the desert and in summer it is appreciated to take a bath in the hottest hours. So if you visit this park in summer do not forget the towel and the swimsuits.
The area consists of a large pool, a smaller one with slides for children and a bubble pool, jacuzzi. In the same facilities we will find changing rooms and a bar to eat.
The animal reserve is fully integrated with the landscape of the Tabernas desert, and to recreate the animal habitat of this zoo they have added water cascades and trees.
This zoo has many species of animals adapted to arid or semi-arid areas we can see a lot of birds, antelope species, wildebeest, African buffalo, desert foxes, giraffes, ostriches, rhinos, meerkats, crocodiles, lions, bears , tigers, and a long etcetera.
The animal reserve is on the slope of a hill with a steep slope, so a train has been enabled, for people with mobility problems or the smallest ones can make them, approximately, 3 kilometers of route without walking. The little train leaves the bears square and makes paraditas to be able to contemplate the animals.
Every day there is a bird show, in which three parrots, parrots and other trained exotic birds are shown in three shifts in the morning, midday and afternoon. This show loves the children who will see how these seen birds fly over their heads. Next to the bird theater there is a cafeteria with a covered terrace that is an excellent viewpoint of the animal reserve.
This zoo also has a reptile, where you can see the most common snakes and lizards in deserts around the world, a cave of bats, a museum of footprints, or a gallery where Several desert and jungle habitats are recreated with animals such as toucans, turtles, marmosets and fennec foxes.
Both in the zoo area and in the pools there are several places where you can buy drinks or bars where you can sit down to have something fresh, since this park is in the desert and it is usually quite hot.
